All About Dampwood Termites In Singapore

Dampwood termites are rarely found in homes. They are usually found in dead trees or in wet, rotting wood. If you find them in your home, it is probably because there is water damage or some other source of moisture that is attracting them.

Dampwood termites are larger than drywood termites and have darker coloring. They need a lot of moisture to survive, so they are found near sources of water. If you have dampwood termites in your home, you will need to find and eliminate the source of moisture that is attracting them.

Dampwood termites are not as destructive as drywood termites, but they can still cause significant damage to your home if left unchecked.

Treatment Needed For Dampwood Termites

> Termites Corrective Treatment

Termiticide formulation is injected into the soil to create a chemical barrier to the termites.

> Soil Treatment (Pre-construction)

A non-repellent termiticide sprayed on the soil will create a barrier to keep termites from getting into your building and causing infestation.

Signs of Dampwood Termites

Dampwood termites have the notoriety of using their own feces to plug up holes in the exterior of their homes if necessary. If the wood they live in is on drier side, typically pellets will fall straight to the ground. However, if conditions are more moist, these droppings may sticky and adhere to walls surrounding them.

Dampwood termites do not live in the soil. They do not dig tunnels like subterranean termites. Inside wood that dampwood termites have damaged, it usually appears clean and polished. They generally munch on the grain, particularly in decaying wood.

Dampwood Termites Habits

> What Do They Eat

Dampwood Termites typically go after damp wood that is in close proximity to the ground or other wooden materials kept near water. The cellulose found in wood is the main nourishment of all termites, and any type of plant matter can be destroyed.

> Their Habitat

The primary food requirement of all termites, as well as all types of plant material, is most often attacked by Dampwood Termites or woods in direct touch with soil or wooden materials kept near water since to the cellulose found in wood.

> Their Behaviour

While other termites in Singapore build underground nests, these dampwood termites don’t need to since they do not require contact with soil. Instead, they only consume wood that’s moist or has high moisture content.

Other Questions About Dampwood Termites

Are Dampwood termites harmful?

Dampwood termites can cause roof leaks when you don’t have a proper inspection system on your homes such as cement mortar rafters or metal sheathing; there is then no separation between drywall, plywood subflooring, underlayments, and soffits which all create places where water can seep into without being detected until it becomes noticeable by homeowners.

When these pests eat away at wood structures inside the roof, this leads to gaps and cracks which can cause leakage.

How do Dampwood termites look like?

The swarmers, or winged reproductives, kings and queens of this species are dark brown; soldiers are brown or yellowish in color; and nymphs have spotted abdomens. Probably the best way to determine the presence of these termites, as well as other species of dampwood termites, is the appearance of the infested wood.

How do Dampwood termites reproduce?

The colony’s winged reproductive adults swarm during late May through September and, after mating, start a new colony.

Pest Management Solutions

Customised treatment plan that removes subterranean termite and the drywood termites

Subterranean termite baiting systems feed termites who then take the bait back to their nests.

This type of system can lead to the termite eradication by killing of the entire colony either by the sharing of the insecticides or the killing off of the worker termites in order to starve the rest of the colony.
Treating the soil beneath the building and around foundations when it is still in the process of construction is a good way to prevent termite infestation.

The soil in immediate contact with the foundation and floor structure of a building is treated with an insecticide which kills termites thus forming a toxic barrier which is lethal to termite entry.

Pre-construction anti-termite treatment is done in the early stages of construction so as to prevent termite infestation in the constructed building.
Corrective treatment provides total protection of buildings that were not chemically soil treated during construction stage or the soil treatment was done some years back and the chemical effect has already been bio – degraded.

To prevent further subterranean termite invasion to the building, corrective treatment will be recommended. This involve injection of termiticide solution around the external building perimeter by rodding or drilling method.
Periodic inspection is recommended if preventive treatment cannot be carried out.

Early detection is essential to minimise costly damage and repair from any subterranean termite infestation.

Our qualified Thermographers will scan your home with our Thermal Imaging Camera to identify infestation areas and entry points of the subterranean termite.

Treatment will then be carried out using our baiting system.
