Q: What do booklice look like, and how big are they?

Booklice are tiny, pale, wingless insects about 1 to 2 mm long, roughly the size of a pinhead. They are translucent white to grey or light brown, with a soft body and long, thin antennae. On a wall they look like slow-moving specks of dust.

Q: Are booklice the same as bed bugs?

No. Booklice and bed bugs are different insects and need different treatments. Booklice are 1 to 2 mm long, pale white to light brown, feed on mould and starch, and do not bite. Bed bugs are 5 to 7 mm long as adults, reddish-brown, feed on human blood, and leave itchy bites. Booklice can turn up on mattresses in humid rooms.

What are booklice, and why are they in your home?

Booklice (psocids) are tiny, pale, wingless insects about 1 to 2 mm long. They do not bite and they are not lice. They feed on the microscopic mould that grows on damp surfaces, and on starchy materials such as book-binding glue and wallpaper paste. That is why they show up on walls, ceilings, cabinets, bookshelves and in stored dry food.

In Singapore, booklice are most common in new BTO flats and newly renovated homes, where fresh plaster, paint and carpentry are still drying out, and in rooms with poor ventilation or a hidden leak.

Booklice do not spread disease. But they multiply quickly in humid rooms, contaminate stored food and paper, and point to a moisture problem that will not fix itself.

Why are there booklice on my walls and ceiling?

Moisture. Damp surfaces grow the microscopic mould that booklice feed on.

Drying materials: new plaster, paint or carpentry in new BTO flats and renovated homes

Leaks or seepage: behind walls, under sinks and around windows

Are booklice common in new BTO flats?

Yes. New and newly renovated flats are among the most common places to find booklice in Singapore.

Fresh plaster, cement screed, paint and carpentry hold moisture for months
A closed-up unit has little airflow, so mould grows before anyone moves in
What to do: ventilate daily, run the air-conditioner or a dehumidifier, and treat early

How fast do booklice multiply?

Fast. In Singapore’s warm, humid conditions a new generation can develop in about a month.

Life cycle: egg, four nymph stages, then adult, with no larval stage
